Yamagata University Current Conditions and Project Plans

Yamagata University has developed unique educational and research activities as a comprehensive regional university that implements educational programs with regional society, using the ideas of "co-existence between mankind and nature" and "based in the region, aiming for the world" as its leading concepts. In the area of research, the university is turning itself into a global research base with research projects including the Ministry of Education Global COE Base "International Molecular Epidemiology Education and Research Network Project", the Grant-in-Aid for Specially Promoted Scientific Research "Research on the Construction of Hadron Quarks and Gluons Using Large-Scale Polarized Targets (COMPASS International Collaborative Research)", and the "Organic Electronics Research Base". In particular, the "Organic Electronics Research Base" is unprecedented nationally, and uses investment funds from Yamagata Prefecture for its advancement. The main research base is the "Organic Electronics Valley Project", a project which has acquired research funds from the Ministry of Education's City Area Industry-Academia-Government Collaboration Promotion Project, from NEDO's National Project Research, as well as from other sources. In this area, Yamagata University is leading the world in its research development.

As a means to educate young researchers, the university president is personally promoting the formulation and implementation of the Yuki Plan (Yamagata University Action Plan), providing many kinds of assistance to young researchers including research expense assistance and a system of advisors.

Educational Concept for Young Researchers

This program has been established as a pilot program for the introduction of the tenure track system, and following the program it is hoped that the system will be developed campus-wide. Instructors will be internationally recruited, and the tenure system introduced. In the area of international competitiveness new areas will be able to be pioneered, and young leaders with changed minds will be educated. In concrete terms, nine specially-appointed assistant professors will be hired through international recruitment. During the third and final year of the program investigations will be conducted regarding research, education and management abilities, and based on those results nine individuals will be hired as associate professors as their tenured posts. As measures to prepare and nurture research environments, the allocations of start-up funds and research expense monies will be conducted, as will the placement of academic assistants and other measures. One of the specially-appointed assistant professors will advance as an approach unique to the university. Additionally, assistance for independence will be conducted through various approaches designed to improve research practice, educational, and management abilities. The "Tenure Track Program Promotion Committee" is the future conceptual basis of the organization as a whole, and will be made a standing committee. This committee will be charged with the continual implementation of the educational program.

This program has selected the Graduate School of Science and Engineering as the pilot model "Tenure Track Promotion Area". Through the implementation of the Young Researcher Education Program based on the tenure track system, university-wide diffusion is sought. The Organic Device Major of the Graduate School of Science and Engineering is the core of the Organic Electronics Research Base. This major is involved in "Organic Device Engineering", an extremely practical academic field in which materials science, electronic engineering and mechanical engineering weave creative linkages. It is also an area with a strong relationship with industry, in which fusion with manufacturing technology management science is important. This area contributes greatly to the future manufacture of new electronics such as organic ELs, organic transistors, and organic solar batteries. The practical side of this academic field also possesses a high societal importance. By using this area as the core of the model and adding it to the advanced areas currently being pioneered, high expectations are held regarding the development of a young researcher education method that will give hints for breakthroughs in multiple organically fused academic areas and the pioneering of new fused academic areas including high-efficiency solar electricity generating materials/elements, robotics, biotechnology, and other fields.

Mission Statement

  1. Overview of the Human Resources Education System Reform Concept: This program has selected the Graduate School of Science and Engineering as the "Tenure Track Promotion Area". The program will conduct the international recruitment of instructors and will introduce the tenure system. This program has been established as a pilot program for the introduction of the tenure track system, and following the program it is hoped that the system will be developed campus-wide. Within the environment of international competition we will educate young leaders with changed minds that possess the frontier spirit needed to pioneer new areas focused on the future, and using excellent societal knowledge (Social Intelligence Quotient: SQ) will encourage unison between fellow researchers and staff as well as provide strong leadership for the research team. In realizing this, our goal is to create a unique global research base that gathers together many talented young researchers. Senior officers will be assigned for the smooth implementation of the program, and Senior Mentors and SQ Training Coaches will be assigned for the improvement of educational, research, and management abilities.
  2. Concrete Goals for the End of the Program in the Third Year: (1) The Training of Young Researchers with Changed Minds: Planning will be performed for the acquisition and improvement of abilities and drive to challenge oneself in the research of advanced fused areas, as well as for the acquisition and improvement of knowledge related to competitive funding acquisition skills, industry-academia collaborative practice skills, and intellectual asset management. Opportunities for overseas training will be given to those interested. A research ability development support system of Senior Mentors and Mentor Instructors will be constructed, and efforts will be made to improve practical research abilities. (2) Educational Technique Improvement through English Graduate School Lecture Lesson Practice: Graduate School Specialized Lecture Lesson Practice FD will be implemented. Receiving evaluations from managing instructors and enrolled students, class improvement methods and other educational techniques will be improved. (3) Improvement of Management Skills as Excellent Research Team Leaders: Through participation in SQ ability development and operation of international conferences, as well as by sitting with the management assembly and other conferences, management skills will be improved.
  3. Concrete Goals for the End of the Implementation Period: (1) The results of the improvement of educational, research and management skills will be published. In particular, in the area of SQ ability development, methods for advanced research achievement and the particulars of the process for acquiring these methods will be clarified. (2) Participation in the planning and operation of academic symposiums and academic conferences. (3) Tenure posts will be assumed (Five persons at the end of the implementation period, nine persons by the eighth year). (4) At the end of the program, information will be distributed both inside and outside of the organization on the activities and successes of the tenure track program formed and examined by this program.
  4. Measures to be Taken After the End of the Implementation Period: The Tenure Track Program (TTP) Promotion Committee will remain a standing committee after the end of the implementation period. The committee will continually implement the educational program, as well as develop operational management with built-in measures for continual reform. Operational revenue will be allocated from operational expense grants and various competitive funds.
  5. Desired Ripple Effect: The challenge of the university in keeping Social Intelligence Quotient (SQ) ability development as a pillar of the educational contents at the same time it realizes an improvement of research, education and management abilities is to change the flow of reforms to the system of training young human resources, and to have it play an advanced role as a new and all-purpose effort.
