Abstract:
I will discuss a hierarchy of models aimed to describe flow properties of entangled polymer melts. At the bottom of this hierarchy lies molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of many chains in a box. We are developing algorithms to detect entanglements here and quantify what does entanglement mean. The major challenge is to map MD simulations onto a simpler single-chain model such as slip-springs model (Macromolecules 2005, 38, 6128), which I shall explain in details. This model in turn can be potentially mapped onto a tube model, which however in my view has many shortfalls and limitations. The tube model can lead to constitutive equations, which in turn can be used in engineering finite-element calculations.
