Research Interests
We are studying robots that can work and move in various environments including human living space to support humankind.
In particular, we are challenging the problem of how the mechanism and the control of the “soft” robot that contacts people should be, according to the analysis of human central nervous system.
We are also developing various new mobile mechanisms that can move in omnidirectional way smoothly, and aiming to apply these mechanisms to rescue operation and planetary exploration.
To spread next-generation robots into the human society, we should consider the problem of “how the outer environment should compromise to a next-generation robot as a new industrial product.” The reason why the automobiles have been spread out so widely in the world is that the environment has compromised with “paved roads” to them. The reason why cell phones have been spread out so widely is also that environment has compromised to them with many antennas and ubiquitous broadband networks. Creation of the new market of next-generation robots will be the same. We are considering how the environment should compromise to next-generation robots, what is the needed sensing technology for that kind of compromising, for the development of next-generation robots as “new industrial-products” that match the conditions of functions and costs to be used by many people all over the world. We are also studying to enhance the ability of a next-generation robot itself at the same time.
